第二天，罗杰的供词没有人相信，大房子里的人也一口咬定是他参加宴会后酒醉而去的。为了自己的清白，也是出于好奇心，罗杰根据前晚的线索，找到凯普林的酒店房间，但没有发现什么，却又被人追赶。他又来到联合国大厦，想找大房子的主人，却背上杀害联合国官员的凶手的罪名。

在见面的地点，罗杰不仅没有见到凯普林，反而被一驾小飞机追杀。当他逃过追杀去找凯普林时，却发现他早已退房了，罗杰似乎明白了。他找到坎多，坎多虽然很高兴，但还是让他尽快离去。

罗杰跟踪坎多来到拍卖会，遇到了上次绑架他的男人维丹，当维丹再次准备绑架他时，他在现场开始胡闹，最后被警察带走。FBI的负责人把他带走，告诉了他真相，原来根本没有凯普林这个人，都是FBI制造出来迷惑冷战间谍维丹的，而坎多则是FBI的卧底。9 x0 R# S9 _. g
9 w7 ?& j4 Y) b" y; C5 F 为了让坎多彻底得到维丹的信任，罗杰和坎多上演了一出空包弹的假枪杀，两人也冰释前嫌。FBI想利用坎多跟维丹离开美国，以获取更多情报，但罗杰不能无视坎多接受这样的结果。

在一个个紧张精彩的小段落里，希区柯克展示了他杰出的处理细节的手法。被小飞机追杀逃入玉米地的段落已经成了所有谈到希区柯克必须要引用的经典段落，南斯拉夫著名导演库斯托里卡在美国拍摄的《亚利桑纳梦》中就以一个影迷的身份让自己的演员大段模仿这个段落。此外，拍卖会上逃走、空包弹取信，以及在维丹住所的各种小机小智，虽然已经后人多次模仿，但也还是总觉原汁原味精彩。$ f$ h) I# c8 B: _
