　　一代武术宗师、精武门创始人霍元甲突然逝世，霍师傅生前最喜爱的五徒弟陈真（李小龙 饰）匆匆赶回奔丧，在师傅的棺椁前，陈真悲痛欲绝，暂时终止了和小师妹（苗可秀 饰）完婚的计划，并且不相信师傅死于胃病和感冒的结论。日本虹口道场馆主铃木宽在霍师傅头七之日，派人送上写有“东亚病夫 ”的牌匾，并且出言大肆侮辱精武门，被激怒的陈真随后赶到虹口道场，大败众日本武人，并踢碎了租界公园门口“华人与狗不得入内”的招牌。虹口道场马上派人至精武馆报复，陈真为避免连累师门只得暂离精武门。机缘巧合，陈真发现了日本人害死师傅的证据，他怒不可遏，连毙数名凶手，成为日本人的眼中钉，为了保全精武门，陈真选择独立承担，他在租界外国势力的枪口前纵身跃起……

　　本片是李小龙的第二部功夫电影，至今仍是功夫电影代表作之一。本片突破了以往功夫片狭隘的复仇主题，将影片上升到民族大义，以其强烈的爱国意识和民族精神引起广泛共鸣。例子是陈真飞脚踢碎租界公园大门上“华人与狗不得入内”的木牌，将“东亚病夫”字幅撕碎塞到日本武士口中等著名情节。在打斗中，李小龙第一在银幕上展示了他双截棍的惊人绝技，短小精悍，威力无比。李小龙尽量避免使用蹦床等辅助设备，不用替身。李小龙的功夫电影以男性为主，女演员戏份很少，感情戏也很少，起不到什么作用。李小龙性格粗放，大大咧咧，见到女性就拘谨害羞。本片中苗可秀是女主角，她在《唐山大兄》中尚为女配角。苗可秀与李小龙是世交，自幼相识，是与李小龙合作最多的女演员。影片中，师徒两代人侠肝义胆，为正义与国家不屈不挠，无坚不摧，体现了中国人高贵的武侠精神与爱国主义情操。影片故事曲折紧张，武打动作设计高超，拼杀场面凶狠激烈。尤其是在影片的结尾，陈真一个凌空腾起，画面突然停格，成为功夫片中经典画面，给全世界的观众以震撼。
