Super Troopers 2 Blu-ray, Video Quality   


Super Troopers 2 is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of 20th Century Fox with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.85:1. The IMDb lists the Arri Alexa as having been utilized to digitally capture the imagery, though it doesn't state at what resolution the DI was finished (I suspect 2K, but if anyone knows differently and can point me to authoritative data, I'll happily update the review). For the most part, this has the sleek, smooth and somewhat flat look that can tend to affect Alexa captures, but there's some curious softness in several scenes, especially some interior scenes with dim lighting. It does appear diffusion filters may have been used to give Lynda Carter some "old school" glamour, but a longer sequence in a strip club has some genuine deficits in fine detail as well as near posterizing at times due to the brash red lighting. Otherwise, though, the outdoor material pops quite nicely and fine detail on everything from the contentious mustaches some of the troopers sport to the bristly hair on a real life Grizzly (at least as evidenced by one of the supplements) that shows up at one point is precise looking. The palette hasn't been tweaked in any major way and looks natural throughout. Some of the special effects aren't especially convincing (look at the bus in screenshot 8).

' o  N% \4 p" q' _/ n% Y/ YSuper Troopers 2 features an occasionally boisterous DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that derives a lot of its surround activity from the outdoor ambient environmental sounds, as well as occasional moments that employ things like motorcycles or police cars. A couple of raucous interior scenes, like the strip club sequence, also offer good placement of surround effects. On the whole, though, this is a somewhat limited sound design that tends to place most of the dialogue front and center. Fidelity is fine throughout and there are no problems with damage or distortion.
