　　Two sisters, high school seniors in the early 1980s, awaken one morning to blood red skies and the realization that the human race has been wiped out. It becomes apparant that anyone who was not surrounded by steel when the Earth recently passed through the tail of Haley's comet has been reduced to a pile of red ash (the trace elements of human chemical makeup.) They encounter a rebellious Native American man and take over the air waves at a local radio station in an attempt to get help. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a group of scientists who knew what the effects of the comet would be. They hid underground in a steel laboratory, but idiotically left the vents open. Now, as various survivors of the comet who were only partially surrounded by steel are decaying into flesh-hungry zombies, the scientists are attempting to come up with a vaccine made of the blood of people who were not infected by the comet. Thus the trio must fight their way past not only roving packs of the cannibalistic dead, but also outsmart a pack of scientists desperate not to become that way themselves.

0 v1 x$ h  q8 n' |Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Thom  Eberhardt's Night of the Comet arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of British distributors Arrow Video.

* @1 V' @4 o* b2 u, D8 cThe high-definition transfer has been struck from the same MGM master Shout Factory accessed when they prepared their Blu-ray release of Night of the Comet for the U.S. market. This is certainly excellent news as the film has a wonderful organic appearance. Excluding some tiny dirt specks that occasionally pop up here and there (see screencapture #14) all of the important areas we typically address in our reviews look solid -- image depth and clarity are very good, contrast levels remain stable, and color reproduction is pleasing. There are no traces of problematic degraining corrections.  Compromising sharpening adjustments also have not been applied. Overall image stability is excellent. Finally, there are no encoding anomalies to report in this review. All in all, this is a very good organic presentation of Night of the Comet which should please fans of the film. (Note: This is a Region-B "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-B or Region-Free PS3 or SA in order to access its content).

- O3 z5 q& Y" t0 n  s7 `( MThere is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: English LPCM 2.0. For the record, Arrow Video have provided optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature.

$ V- x9 m# L3 Q1 G' nThe lossless track is excellent. The atmospheric music and the random sounds and noises, for example, are very well balanced (see the the panoramic shots around the 12-minute mark). The rock track also breathe easily throughout the entire film. Overall dynamic intensity is rather limited, but this should not be surprising considering the fact that the film's creators had to work with a very small budget. During the action sequences, however, there is plenty of depth (see the department store shootout). The dialog is clean, stable, and very easy to follow. There are no pops, cracks, audio dropouts, background hiss, or digital distortions to report in this review.
