　　故事背景设定在1990年，一位名叫大卫(布莱恩·兰迪斯·福尔金斯饰)的孤独单身汉试图逃离照顾年迈的母亲(凯瑟琳·布雷迪饰)的日常苦差事。在通过视频约会服务寻找伴侣时，他发现了一盘奇怪的录像带，名叫Rent-A-Pal。这盘录像带由魅力十足的安迪(威尔·惠顿饰)主持，为他提供了急需的陪伴、同情和友谊。但是，安迪的友谊是有代价的，大卫拼命挣扎着付得起入场费。
