Universal's UHD upgrade for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World includes 2160p resolution and Dolby Vision color grading. The former yields a solid improvement to overall image crispness and clarity. The picture is more assuredly filmic and steadier in grain management. Details are appreciably sharper on the UHD compared to the aged Blu-ray, itself not a poor image by any stretch of the imagination but bested here by a good margin. Facial definition is tighter and more intensely intimate, environments clearer and more revealing, in-screen graphics look sharper, and clothes appear more texturally robust. This is a very attractive film-quality image.

The Dolby Vision color grading adds plenty of punch and intensity, yielding impeccably bright whites (look inside a record store at the 8:27 mark) and deeper, more refined black levels. Skin tones are more lifelike and color rendition on the whole, through the whole spectrum of bright primaries and flat earthy tones and everything in between, present with high yield stability, accuracy, and nuance alike. The image thrives most at those extremes, though, in white luminance and black depth, but everything in between is very rich and true. There are no print wear issues and no encode anomalies of note, either. This is a very satisfying image: true, filmic, and good looking start to finish. Fans are going to be delighted.

Universal upgrades Scott Pilgrim vs. The World to Dolby Atmos audio for its UHD release and the results speak for themselves. This is a loud, intense, fluid, and perfectly balanced soundtrack. The sense of spacious perfection is in evidence in practically every scene, whether basic dialogue exchanges or one of Scott's early film dreams where the cavernous expansion seems to extend the listening area to near infinity. Action scenes are a full on delight. They are loud, intense, and hold nothing back. The fight scene at the 31-minute mark, for example, is quite the sonic extravaganza. There's no shortage of intense bass, seamless surround and overhead engagement, and a perfectly blended harmony of intensity and accuracy at every turn. Music surges through with razor-sharp clarity and room-filling excellence. Support atmosphere never fails for detail and positioning. Dialogue clarity never misses.
