7 x5 D. ^0 A5 Q6 o: E7 [4 K; X" j"Because the 35mm original negative no longer exists, this restoration, undertaken by the Criterion Collection, draws primarily from a 35mm nitrate composite fine-grain master made from the original negative in 1941. Some sequences where the primary element had sustained damage were replaced using a 35mm duplicate negative, struck from the nitrate-grain master itself in 1941. Both film elements were scanned in 16-bit 4K resolution on a Lasergraphics Director film scanner, utilizing high-density scanning and 3-flash HDR (high dynamic range) in order to retrieve the greatest amount of detail from the dense nitrate element. A 35mm print from the collection of the Academy Archive at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was used as a color-grading reference in this restoration, with additional reference to the 2010 Warner Bros. restoration, whose grading was based on the same reference print. On the 4K Blu-ray disc, the feature is presented in Dolby Vision HDR. On the Blu-ray, it is presented in high-definition SDR (standard dynamic range).

1 v5 t- f4 _, j! d3 TFor restoration of the original monaural soundtrack, the bilateral variable-area optical tracks from the both the nitrate fine-grain master and the duplicate negative were transferred at Deluxe Sound Services in Hollywood, using the COSP system. The cleanest surviving sections of the two the elements were selected and compiled into a single track. After eight years, the physical damage to the optical tracks was substantial, manifesting as audible pops, clicks, dropouts, and other distortions. These artifacts were digitally mitigated on a case-by-case basis, with every effort to preserve the character of the original production.

I viewed the film with HDR enabled and on my system I could identify three areas with meaningful improvements. (I compared the 4K presentation with the 1080p presentation from Warner Bros.'s previous Blu-ray release of Citizen Kane. The first area is the overall dynamic range of the visuals, which for obvious reasons is entirely predictable. Indeed, the visuals tend to look slightly darker yet richer, in numerous areas boasting finer ranges of darker shadow nuances. I think that some of these improvements can be appreciated a lot easier if you are looking at the 1080p presentation at the same time, but the difference is immediately noticeable. The second area is the density of the visuals. Excluding the intentionally manipulated material from the very beginning of the film, elsewhere the improvement is immediately evident. A larger screen will make the improvement a lot more obvious, but you won't have to have a very large screen to appreciate it. The third and final area is where some of the most dramatic improvements are. It is the grayscale, which is clearly superior. Obviously, HDR is again a factor, but I think that grays are noticeably expanded and as a result the perception of depth is positively affected as well. Now, it is very possible that different systems will produced different results, but I personally found the improvements in this area to be the most significant ones. All in all, despite some inherited limitations -- which are addressed in the quoted text above -- I think that the 4K presentation is simply marvelous. My score is 4.75/5.00. (Note: This is a Region-Free release).

On the Blu-ray disc I received there appears to be some sort of an issue. At the moment, I do not know it if is present on all 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray releases, but I have contacted the folks at Criterion for clarification. Here's what I am seeing on my disc:

Early into the film, where the action moves to the newspaper building in New York, the dynamic range of the visuals begins to change rather dramatically, and with it so do delineation and depth. Obviously, grain exposure becomes very different as well. I don't want to speculate what causes the change, but I did not see it in native 4K. This leads me to believe that there might be some sort of a technical error. When the issue is addressed by the folks at Criterion, I will update our review. (Note: This is a Region-A "locked" release).

There is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: LPCM 1.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.

" l# w* x! Z* i5 sThe native limitations of the original audio are still detectable. However, I think that its overall clarity, sharpness, and stability are very good. I did perform some direct comparisons with the lossless track from Warner Bros' previous Blu-ray release and my impression is that some of the mass scenes can sound a tad better. However, I don't know if the difference will be instantly recognized or appreciated by people that are simply enjoying the 4K presentation.
