　　供职于熊本县天草市某地方报纸的记者远藤玲子（松雪泰子 饰）即将前往位于新泻县中越地区的长冈市采访。此次采访的动因主要有三方面，首先玲子曾亲身经历过2004年的中越地震，2011年她还是首批进入东日本大震灾受灾区之一长冈市采访的记者，此外一封来自长冈山古志村的信更是此行的一大动力。发信人名叫片山健一（高岛政宏 饰），是玲子已失去联络多年的旧日恋人。片山称“现在还赶得上‘战争’”，要玲子尽快过来观看演出。所谓演出是指长冈著名的烟火表演，但是这个表演并非为祭典而准备，而是专门为二战期间空袭以及在震灾中遇难的人们祈福而设，其中更注入了生者对复兴的美好期望。那绚丽多彩的烟火以及其背后深广的意义，强烈吸引着玲子踏上旅程。

She learns about the fireworks in the city and its history, how war ravaged and changed the city and the narrator's lives.
