Catwoman: Hunted 4K Blu-ray, Video Quality

While it's still technically a 2K upscale, Catwoman: Hunted's particular style lends itself to a slightly better 4K, HDR-enhanced presentation than most DCAU productions. It's true that the hazy overall appearance and still relatively flat character designs don't produce a substantial increase in overall fine detail, nor does it even display deep black levels by design. Yet this 2160p transfer appears quite a bit more refined in direct comparison, especially where gradiences and shadow details are cornered. Colors are nicely saturated with no apparent bleeding, even the most vivid hues like those at the opening costume party, bright neon lights, or Batwoman's crimson red wig, This is typically where HDR enhancement excels: not simply boosted overall levels but carefully fine-tuned highlights. Similarly, the better shadow detail and gray scale all but eliminates signs of banding, artifacts, or posterization. Perhaps the only visual speed bump remaining is the appearance of a few jagged or rough edges on certain characters which, in all likelihood, can be traced back to the original source material. Overall, it's a very nice presentation and, while not head-and-shoulders above its 1080p counterpart during certain scenes, the 4K disc remains a clear winner when and where it counts.NOTE: These screenshots are sourced from the included Blu-ray disc, which is also available as a stand-alone release. The default DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix -- same on both discs -- offers a more traditional soundstage that suits its source material perfectly well, balancing dialogue and background effects against the jazzy original score by composer Yutaka Yamada (Tokyo Ghoul). There are ample opportunities for a wide soundstage and, while Catwoman: Hunted doesn't go for broke during all of them, highlights abound such as the bustling costume party, the resulting high-speed car chase, a mid-film skydiving trip, and of course the handful of sequential "boss rush" fights. Discrete effects are surprisingly sparing as the film aims more from a flat atmospheric experience which, while not as immediately showy to new ears, still produces a uniformly satisfying result that will keep viewers entertained from start to finish.Optional subtitles, including English (SDH), and a few dubs are offered during the film and bonus features.
