Red Sonja Blu-ray, Video Quality   


Presented in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Richard Fleischer's Red Sonja arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of British distributors Optimum Home Entertainment.

3 d0 q" e: Z! w+ Y* q9 `4 P9 v) AThe high-definition transfer for the Blu-ray release of Red Sonja appears to have been struck from a dated source. As a result, there are contrast and clarity fluctuations, as well as sporadic color pulsations. Fine object detail is mostly adequate, especially during the daylight footage. During a few selected nighttime scenes, however, it is not. Occasionally, clarity also suffers. Additionally, traces of random mild noise corrections are also easy to see. Light film grain is still present, but some of it is also mixed with light noise. I also spotted mild edge-enhancement popping up here and there. On a positive side, there are no serious stability issues. I also did not see any large cuts, marks, stains, or debris to report in this review. All in all, at best this is an acceptable presentation of a film that is very unlikely to get a stronger treatment in the foreseeable future. (Note: This is a Region-Free Blu-ray disc. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your PS3 or SA regardless of your geographical location. For the record, there is not problematic PAL or 1080/50i content preceding the disc's main menu).

, f, V8 m# k& i, ZThere is only one audio track on this Blu-ray disc: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. For the record, Optimum Home Entertainment have not provided optional English subtitles for the main feature.

* g5 ]" |1 {% z7 g3 z, HThe English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is fairly modest. Its dynamic amplitude is limited, and there are only a couple of scenes where it actually effectively enhances the action. The rear channels, in particular, are not overly impressive. The dialog, however, is clean, stable and easy to follow. There are no serious balance issues to report with Ennio Morricone's soundtrack either. Finally, I did not detect any disturbing pops, cracks, or strong hissings to report in this review. The lack of optional English subtitles, however, is very disappointing.
