　　1940年，一辆放映车驶入卡斯蒂利亚高原的某个村子，孩子们马上围拢了上去。放映的电影是《科学怪人》，座位上有女童安娜（Ana Torrent 饰）和她的小姐姐伊莎贝尔（Isabel Tellería 饰）。放映室外，父亲痴迷于自己的新蜂房，他掏出怀表，结束了今天的工作。母亲正在写一封信，尽管对方收到信的可能渺茫，母亲在信纸上倾诉思念之情，在火车站将信投递。安娜久久不能忘记科学怪人，伊莎贝尔向她虚构出荒原上一座孤立的砖房是怪人的出没之地。安娜惊慌逃开，但从此不时返回砖房查看。伊莎贝尔似乎洞悉了某种秘密，她装死、跳过火堆，诸如此类。不久一名受伤军人躲进砖房被安娜发现，当晚军人中枪死亡。父亲来到村公所拿走军人的物品，包括一只怀表。安娜独自一个跑出村子，夜里她在湖边遇到了科学怪人……
