Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Blu-ray, Video Quality

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier arrives on Blu-ray "remastered from a 4K scan of the original film elements." Derided, decried, and doubted though the film may be amongst fans, Paramount has not cut any corners for this new Blu-ray presentation. This is a handsomely filmic image, true to the source and boating a fine grain structure that is even and pleasing and without massive fluctuations in density or any sign of scrubbing. On the contrary, and unlike the previous picture which looked fairly waxy and artificial, this has a very pure, satisfying appearance about it. Details are very true and attractive, revealing skin with superb clarity and costumes with tactile layers and levels and material elements. Locations are beautifully rendered as well. Whether the dusty nothingness of Nimbus III, the natural splendor and diverse complexity of the Yosemite Park landscape and the mountain face, or the bridge of the Enterprise, every location looks clear and complex.

Colors enjoy stable accuracy. The palette here is rendered much more truly compared to the previous Blu-ray, which looked garish and oversaturated. Here, tones are not dim or dull but rather coming from a place of improved realism. Red Starfleet uniforms stand apart for authenticity and look a bit fuller than they do on the remastered Blu-ray for The Undiscovered Country. Bright clothes out in the sunlight at Yosemite, and the natural greens around the park, pop with all of the vibrancy Blu-ray can muster. Black levels are excellent, especially out in space. Whites can't reach the level of intensity and realism as found on the companion Dolby Vision UHD, but they look great for Blu-ray. This is a resoundingly good image and a well worthy upgrade over the very iffy 2009 release.
