Legion of Super-Heroes Blu-ray, Video Quality

Though bested by its 4K counterpart in direct comparison, Warner Bros.' 1080p transfer of Legion of Super-Heroes is a respectable HD encoding of this modest but visually appealing production. Its strengths and weaknesses will be very familiar to long-time followers of DCAU direct-to-video fare: the clean linework and smooth appearance trades in heavier textures for a sleek appearance, albeit one that occasionally falls victim to trace compression issues like stray artifacts, banding, and posterization. Still, these occasional roadblocks are generally few and far-between, rarely distracting, and not all that out-of-bounds due to native format limitations. Colors run the gamut from muted and moody to bright and vivid, and its clean saturation values and heavy linework look good in tandem with no apparent bleeding or other anomalies. A dual-layered disc and more careful compression would've edged this closer to top marks... but even as-is, Legion of Super-Heroes a good-looking Blu-ray that gets the job done.

3 S, G/ l, I0 u/ {" f" LThe default DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 doesn't necessarily play it safe but nonetheless sounds exactly as expected; nothing more, nothing less. Dialogue is typically placed front and center, even in group settings, although location and volume often helps it drift into the rear channels. Discrete effects during fights and other action scenes are largely strong and effective, building an ample amount of drama. LFE isn't overpowering but kicks in as needed, with plenty of room left over for Kevin Riepl's intermittent but effective orchestral score. Overall, it's well-balanced and gets the job done; even without taking much in the way of sonic risks, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed here.Optional English (SDH) subtitles are included during the main feature and most extras.
