! g3 T. o4 j" ]) D9 UStar Wars: Rebels features a striking 1080p/AVC-encoded video presentation with very few issues. A hint of banding here, a touch of aliasing there, but nothing significant. Colors are bold and beautiful, contrast is strong and consistent, primaries ignite, and black levels are deep and satisfying. Detail impresses too, with a surprising amount of fine texture on faces, clothing, ship walls and lightsaber hilts, and a touch of digital grain that adds an extra filmic, Original Trilogy touch. Edges are clean and refined too, though poring over screenshots reveals slight hints of softness that isn't visible when an episode is in motion. There also isn't any macroblocking, ringing or other anomalies of note, making for a faithful presentation of the series' animation.

# M9 z6 ]3 i5 r4 p3 b9 VEven though Star Wars: The Clone Wars first arrived with lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, Warner eventually changed course, granting the series' third, fourth and fifth seasons lossless DTS-HD Master Audio tracks. Disney's release of the Netflix- born sixth season took a step back, though, with a return to lossy audio. Rebels unfortunately continues that trend, with a solid 640kbps Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track. Is it a big loss? Probably not. I suspect most listeners wouldn't know the difference. That doesn't make the development any less disappointing, of course, so set your expectations accordingly. The good news? Voices are intelligible and thoughtfully prioritized with an assortment of OT-era sound effects. LFE output is decidedly decent. Rear speaker activity is engaging, with enveloping directionality. And the John Williams-inspired score is full and effective. All told, it isn't exceedingly remarkable, but it more than gets the job done.

Star Wars Rebels: Complete Season Two arrives on Blu-ray with an enjoyably proficient 1080p transfer. Colors are well saturated, particularly some of the brighter shades of lightsaber red and blue, Ahsoka's orange flesh, and plenty of other primary and support hues on display throughout. Details are fine. The show isn't by design all that intricately defined. That sort of blocky Disney Infinity look doesn't leave much room for nuance, but basic character shape, definition, and detail on attire and surrounding objects, like starship hulls, walls, and terrain, are enjoyably crisp and nicely revealing of the finer points the digital artists have created. Black levels hold up nicely in dark shots and scenes. A little bit of aliasing can be seen scattered around the season, though it only rarely rises to a level of noticeable annoyance. Otherwise, the picture is in fine shape, and Disney's presentation does Rebels proud.

Star Wars Rebels: Complete Season Two features a usually passable but sometimes shallow Dolby Digital 5.1 lossless soundtrack. The season begins with a disappointingly uneventful presentation. At reference volume, it's timid at best. Movement and detailing aren't lost, but the track has no soul, no sense of purpose, idling more than exploding. Ship crashes, explosions, and other sorts of would-be sonic delights fail to find much energy or oomph. Even dialogue sounds reserved, shy, though placement and clarity are fine. As the show progresses, the track picks up in intensity. By the end, it's still a good bit away from the excellence a lossless track may have provided, but it finds better balanced and engaged volume at reference, superior low end accompaniment to everything from lightsaber swooshes to explosions, and a more noticeable surround compliment. Music fares better, too, enjoying a more assertive presentation. The track is fine when it's on top of its game, not so much when it's shyly running for cover in the early going.

Star Wars Rebels: Complete Season Three features a 1080p transfer that's largely in-line with its predecessors. Detailing pleases. Good, stable clarity allows the image to capture a number of well-worn elements throughout the Star Wars universe that give even the relatively simple animation a sense of tangible, tactile authenticity, whether flight uniforms, cockpits, weapons, armor, ship exteriors, structures, terrain, or most anything else that might catch one's eye. Character complexity in close-up pleases as well; the image brings out much off the structural nuance and surface details that define the many different beings scattered throughout the season. Colors please. The palette is certainly not inspiring and might even push a hair drab at times, but accuracy appears on despite the lack of total, blinding vibrancy. Lightsabers, variously colored skin, astral anomalies, rank insignias, uniforms...name it, and saturation and stability hold. Blacks are impressively firm as well. The image does struggle with some jagged lines and minor aliasing, though rarely do they even rise to the level of "minor annoyance."

Star Wars Rebels: Complete Season Three again, like its predecessors, features a capable but in no way wonderful Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Its defining characteristic is its inability to offer the sort of power at reference volume one might expect. Delivery is timid in most cases, While spacing is adequate in terms of music, effects, and ambience alike, and while it's not a struggle to hear, it clearly lacks a more hearty, impactful sort of stage presence one would rather enjoy in a Star Wars universe. Still, for a lossy track, general elemental clarity satisfies, whether score or a number of familiar Star Wars sound effects, like various types of laser blasts and engine hums and whirrs. There's a fair sense of immersion as applicable. Dialogue is generally well prioritized and consistently positioned in the front-center location.

Star Wars Rebels: Season Four's 1080p transfer delivers a pleasing experience with irregular flaws. Banding, aliasing, and noise are infrequent but present and only rarely to even a noticeable, never mind distracting, level. Details are sharp. The animation's textural intricacies are revealed with ease. Whether character models, vehicles, or environments, this 1080p presentation brings out the best, particularly on more complex models where fine variations and structural variables appear tangible and tactile, which is a bit different from the smoother, more precise character renderings and rounder shapes. Colors are healthy, never particularly bold but finding a nice level of saturation and accuracy, whether considering irregular character skin tones (blue, green), laser blasts, explosions, or planet terrain. Black outer space shots hold very deep. This is a very satisfying visual presentation from Disney.

9 a0 d& _( @: W( y7 |7 o+ W+ ~Star Wars Rebels: Season Four lacks the definition, engagement, and power that the material demands. Laser blasts and explosions are not particularly stout. The space battle in "Rebel Assault," for example, is fairly described as a disappointment. The sequence presents basics well enough but struggles to engage with any sort of vitality and stage-commanding intensity. Still, surround engagement and directionality are prominent, but the lack of volume and weight fail to bring a greater sense of sonic grandeur to action. This Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation is a Disney track, though, and cranking the volume upwards helps to even it out, but the absence of a tighter, more potent low end keeps the material from shining. Music follows, never wanting for more spacing but struggling with volume and depth. Support effects are nicely balanced within the stage but also come up lacking. Dialogue is center focused and well prioritized but needs that volume boost as well.
