3 q& _2 O; t% x! F$ ]$ |% Y* mPower Rangers is presented on 4K UHD courtesy of Lionsgate Films with a 2160p transfer in 2.40:1. Hey, devoted home theater aficionados! Remember when just a relatively few months ago you shelled up to potentially several thousands to upgrade your environments to 4K UHD capability (replete with the new audio codecs being offered, which typically involved buying a new receiver)? Well, guess what? All of that's completely obsolete now! Yay? The foregoing is of course said in jest, but with a recognition that there's yet another new "bell and/or whistle" in the 4K UHD universe, namely Dolby Vision, which is starting to appear on a number of new 4K UHD releases, including this one. We don't yet have Dolby Vision capable equipment (stay tuned), so I can't comment on any difference the Dolby Vision experience will provide when compared to the "standard" HDR and increased resolution of the 4K UHD disc (and it kind of amuses me to even be thinking in these terms, reminded as I am of several The Simpsons episodes where hapless Homer thinks he's just purchased the latest technology, only to have his hopes dashed, sometimes within nanoseconds).

% }5 ^9 r/ m; P! a6 RWith that disclaimer out of the way, this is a really impressive looking 4K UHD viewing experience, one which takes the already impressive 1080p Blu- ray presentation and ups the ante in virtually every department we assess in our reviews. Right from the get go in the opening prehistoric sequence, there's noticeably better detailing in both the volcanic environment as well as the wash of ash raining down from the sky, both in terms of detail levels and the range of colors on display. The saturation on the Power Rangers suits is also noticeably richer, something that will continue once the modern day Rangers don their outfits. But there are some subtle palette changes in evidence even in this early sequence. Notice, for example, when Rita is consigned to her watery (supposed) grave, and the upper left corner of the frame's reddish tinted water has a really lustrous, almost crimson, glow now. Speaking of glow, the "power coin glow" is also a bit more intense in this version, in yet another example of sometimes subtle but quite interesting changes from the 1080p Blu-ray viewing experience. A number of other textures become more palpable in the 4K UHD presentation, including the rocks in the underground lair, as well as the kind of "pixellated" wall where Zordon counsels the modern day Rangers. Some of the most interesting and cool looking changes revolve around Goldar, with both intensity of palette and texturing looking more nuanced in this version (the swirly "gold leaf" hues are noticeably more varied on the 4K UHD disc). My one and only passing and very minor complaint is that some of the spaceship and/or underground material can still be lacking in shadow detail, but even this element is improved in the 4K UHD version.
