The improbable egg-carton hills of Southern China seem to float in a sea
+ M1 ^; N9 r, i* ?1 | of glistening rice paddies. This is a landscape full of surprises. Next
) T. b! I2 L, S0 v8 m1 G9 T to peasants ploughing with buffaloes are rivers concealing dwarf
alligators and giant salamanders, trained cormorants that catch fish for
their masters, bats with unusual tastes and monkeys that hide in caves.
* [$ i8 j( G& U; q& y; ]1 C! U) d But this isn't a nature park. Almost 300 million people live here, with a
9 o1 M4 @9 w9 V8 _ tradition of eating wildlife. So what forces have shaped this
; k2 [% V6 w; eremarkable landscape and how do farmers and wild creatures manage to
coexist among the rocks and the rice fields?
  
Shangri-La
Hidden beneath billowing clouds, in China's remote south west, are
4 p7 [8 I* H* F2 g6 e6 U8 y8 }2 mperhaps the richest natural treasures in all China. Immense rivers carve
+ s. f/ _1 I8 w0 b2 t, o their way south below towering peaks. The wind-swept slopes are home to
5 f1 G/ w8 _5 N the highest-living primates in the world and hidden in the valleys
below are jungles with a diversity of wildlife comparable to those
: d; _# A4 F4 A# t5 {around the Amazon.
Jewel-coloured birds and ancient tribes share forests where wild
elephants still roam. The mystery is that Yunnan's remote forests
stretch into northern territories where deserts would normally be found.
How can these northern forests exist? The rugged landscape holds the
% p; i  c) W4 E8 q5 s8 Qkey.

- U' |2 s, `( j4 G; H* S The Tibetan plateau covers a quarter of China – an area the size of
3 [( J. b- h% y/ L0 k* W( g8 o/ {Western Europe. This vast, windswept wilderness is one of the world's
3 W/ k# S, S, p0 z! \; j2 qmost remote places, defined by the glacier-strewn Himalayas. It's also
" `& Q8 B. }0 N+ B3 Ohome to some incredible wildlife such as the rare chiru, brown bears,
% g4 H% V; x/ m; v2 ?4 Vwild yaks and the highest-living predators on Earth. There are more
9 E2 U  X( O0 h' zlarge creatures here than anywhere else in China.
Defined by over a thousand years of Buddhism, Tibet has a unique culture
that has nurtured remarkable beliefs. The programme discovers why this
" v/ ~+ @( y  C8 N# blandscape and ancient culture is the life support system for much of the
; E- N1 h* r/ x. v planet.

China's emperors built the Great Wall to keep their kingdom safe from
8 q8 G8 _$ O* athe hostile barbarians to the north. This is a land of warrior tribes,
9 r: _, c. \! ~. pbizarre wildlife and extreme weather, but also of vast and breathtaking
9 S6 \. D6 ^% j1 |$ L# o6 A' ]evergreen forests, grassy plains and sweeping desert dunes, rich with

The legendary Silk Road drew traders and their camels across the deserts
. P& z+ F. x6 {6 F in search of fabulous wealth, and fierce Mongolian horsemen conquered
the known world. Today, nomadic tribesmen still race horses and hunt

China's heartland with its Han people is the centre of a 5,000-year-old

and Beijing's Olympic Stadium and is home to some of China's most
charismatic creatures such as the giant panda, golden snub-nosed monkey,

China has undergone significant development in the past 50 years,
bringing many environmental problems. The programme explores the deep,
