This 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD release of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was "remastered from the original film elements." The results are spectacular, besting even the wonderful remastered Blu-ray for precision, grain management, and overall filmic appearance. Grain appears a little more even here, with less density changes, however minor that may be on the Blu-ray. The picture here is very faithfully true to the source and the film medium. Details are very crisp, obviously well beyond the DNR Blu-ray of yore and surpassing the aforementioned remastered Blu-ray not by leaps and bounds but certainly with enough resolution gain to boast enhanced skin and environmental details that bring out the very best on faces, bridge appointments, and the mines on Rura Penthe. Small uniform fabric details delight in close-up as well.

% l7 ~7 N! O' F* N3 [! t9 f" H8 tFrom the purple titles and the purple-ish blast from the Praxis explosion, viewers will know that are in for a treat. The Dolby Vision colors are richer here compared to the Blu-ray, offering firmer, but still not at all garish, red uniform tones. The blue captain's chair on the Excelsior stands out as a particularly rich shade, though still a bit toned down overall. This grading certainly distinguishes itself from the Blu-ray; it's brighter for sure, and there is less of an obvious red push to skin tones. Some colors look deeper, others a little more neutrally adjusted, but the feel for precision is unmissable. Various grayscale surfaces are deep and true. Black levels are superior here and the white collars on uniforms are far crisper and more lifelike. This is a very true, authentic look for the film. Add the absence of print flaws and encode issues and this is easily the new standard for visual excellence for this release.
