The Blu-ray release of Battlestar Galactica accurately preserves the artistic intentions of the creators. The stylized visual elements within certain scenes are intentional and faithful to the broadcast presentation of the television show.
. g1 U- \" t" F7 X. a; o
0 r3 C" @1 `8 uSo opens the 1080p/VC-1 encoded Blu-ray edition of Battlestar Galactica: Season 1, a faithful-to-a-fault presentation if there ever was one. As Universal did with The Complete Series and Season 4.5, the series' at-times intrusive grain, harsh noise and garish digital anomalies are intact and Moore's every gritty intention has been preserved. That being said, those who look past his aesthetic choices will be treated to a satisfying picture in its own right. Warm oranges and searing Caprican yellows are bold and vibrant, blacks are inky and well-resolved, and skintones, whether human or Cylon, are natural and lifelike. Yes, Moore frequently allows color to bleed from the image, granting the steely hull of a battle cruiser and the cold sheen of marching Centurions power over the palette. And yes, many a shot is deprived of primary punch, whites surge and relent, and contrast charges and retreats depending on the tone and tenor of a scene. But it's all within the spirit of Galactica. Detail remains relatively strong through it all – despite some persistent interference from the aforementioned noise – and close-ups are often striking. Granted, the miniseries is cursed with a limited budget and its image quality suffers as a result, but any issues should be attributed to the source, not Universal's technical efforts. Artifacting, ringing, and other nonsense is kept to a bare minimum, and the presentation clings to Moore's bleak vision like a dutiful child.

The quality of Universal's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is more apparent from the outset. Again, the miniseries is a bit weak in the knees, but the season proper is blessed with crisp dialogue, hearty LFE support, and an immersive, three-dimensional soundfield. Raptors and raiders careen from speaker to speaker, encircling each other as smoothly and effortlessly as their pilots' well-prioritized chatter engages the listener. Explosions and gunfire are startling and weighty, shaking the room as readily as they shake the Galactica. Better still, Bear McCreary's evocative, oft-times heart-pounding score makes its presence known, haunting quiet conversations and intensifying the series' brisk action scenes. Through it all, directionality is precise, pans are transparent, and dynamics are commanding, lending the soundscape a richness and maturity usually found in more nuanced Hollywood blockbusters. There are a handful of occasions in which the actors lines' are buried beneath more chaotic sequences, but I suspect Moore wouldn't have it any other way. Fans will be ecstatic, inductees will be impressed, and audiophiles will crack more than a few smiles.

1 j; B3 E% J4 xWorried about Battlestar's video quality? Rest easy, dear readers. Here's what creator/executive producer Ronald D. Moore had to say about the Blu-ray edition of his beloved series:- Q9 w' d1 F( T! E

"This is a very exciting thing. We shoot Battlestar Galactica in high definition on digital videotape, and have from the very beginning. But typically, in the broadcast format, you're not able to see all the depth and detail, and appreciate the photography that [director of photography] Steve McNutt has provided to the show ever since the beginning of the series. This is a chance to really see what the show actually looks like. When we mix and edit the show, we don't even really watch it in HD. The HD master is something that's sort of finished off in other parts of post production. As a result, I myself don't even get to watch the HD master very often. So it's kind of a treat for me to see the beauty of the images we've actually captured, as well as the amazing sound. So sit back, relax and enjoy this because I think you'll really get a chance to see Battlestar Galactica for the first time in a whole new way, and see the show as it was meant to be seen."* @, {" M8 W, H3 M$ Z

Primed for launch with a faithful-to-a-fault 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer, Season Two looks every bit as grainy, grimy and noisy as it should, lending BSG's second hurrah a visceral edge most science fiction series fumble or bypass altogether. McNutt's palette is overrun with blown-out whites, intense blacks and brief bursts of beautiful primary brilliance, and every jarring variance, eye-scorching contrast tweak and oppressive shadow enhances Moore's established aesthetic all the more. Detail is quite striking as well, so long as you're prepared to endure a slew of soft shots and obscured visuals. Fine textures are crisp one moment, muddy the next; skintones range from colorless to lifelike to oversaturated, occasionally in the span of minutes; delineation initially reveals then suddenly obscures the series' production design... and so it goes and so it goes. Again though, it all falls within the blemished bounds of Moore's vision. The only downside? Minor artifacting and banding appear from time to time, and noise tends to surge and relent, making it difficult to discern whether each anomaly traces back to the original source or slight imperfections in the technical presentation. That being said, Galactica isn't (and isn't meant to be) a pristine show by any stretch of the imagination, meaning any such shortcomings are hardly cause for concern.

Of Battlestar Galactica's four seasons, Season Two and Three are the sonic standouts, narrowly besting the series' already impressive bookends. Unleashing hell at every twist, turn and FTL jump, Universal's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track leaves a lasting mark. LFE output is both hearty and nuanced, disrupting planetside skirmishes with the roar of heavy artillery, pairing chaotic warship battles with the perfectly muffled thoom thoom of in-space canon fire, and ripping through steel hulls and toppling concrete buildings with devastating force. Rear speaker activity is spot on as well, complementing the track's low-end fury with haunting ambient effects and eerily convincing acoustics. The whole of the mix is incredibly immersive, and it's easy to forget the soundscape is the product of a television show. More importantly, dialogue remains intelligible and smartly prioritized. Lines are never lost (unless they're meant to be), effects only overwhelm conversations when called upon to do so, and everything from Starbuck's war cries to Adama's hair-raising speeches are crystal clear. And Bear McCreary's score? Be it the sobering lament of a violin or the rousing rum tum tum of timpani marching to war, the series soars with McCreary's triumphant strings, stirring wind instruments and sternum-thumping percussion. Suffice to say, Season Two boasts a lossless powerhouse; one that makes Battlestar Galactica's soundfield every bit as sophisticated and refined as the episodes it accompanies.

r" w [/ y: }; kI'm assuming anyone who's considering purchasing Battlestar Galactica: Season Three has already picked up the series' first two seasons, so I'll skip any long, drawn out explanation concerning the show's unkempt appearance and Moore's visceral intentions. Simply put, Universal's 1080p/VC-1 transfer is every bit as fit and faithful as its first and second season counterparts, and looks as grainy and noisy as it should. On New Caprica, contrast is stark and overbearing, colors bristle with malicious intent, and shadows envelop and overwhelm. On the Galactica, warmer tones prevail. Savory browns and oranges settle in Adama's quarters, deep blues and lifelike skintones swarm the bridge, and water-stained hues and bottomless shadows lend depth to the ship's corridors. Regardless of locale, details are as crisp as they could possibly be -- some closeups are startlingly refined, others are anything but -- and delineation follows suit. My only lingering hesitation? Like Season One and Two, it's impossible to know how proficient Universal's presentation really is. With so much noise, so many digital anomalies, and so much fluctuating grain in every episode, viewers simply won't be able to determine where intention ends and any potential problems begin. Still, it's hardly worth debate. Season Three comes with Moore's stamp of approval, and looks every bit as rough and rickety as the rest of the series. Besides, at this point viewers should know what to expect and realize how effective Galactica's aesthetics can be.. [8 e- g" T+ A! @ j9 P" S

Season Three's lossless track stands alongside Season Two's mix at the head of the series pack. Universal's immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is nothing short of magnificent, embracing every Battlestar freefall, Basestar implosion, automatic weapons burst, precarious Raptor landing, and Bear McCreary-composed drum line Galactica's twenty-episode third season has on tap. Dialogue is clean and clear, and rarely exhibits the (admittedly minor) prioritization mishaps that occasionally pop up in other BSG releases. The LFE channel fuses palpable heft into any effect that requires its power, spine-shaking resolve into planetary explosions, and rousing thooms into score cues and percussion flairs. Likewise, rear speaker activity is fierce and fluid, crafting a thoroughly convincing soundfield where a two-dimensional television experience could have resided. Ambience is nimble and natural, interior acoustics are believable, and directionality is spot on. New Caprican insurgent attacks send debris skittering across the floor, and surround the listener with the roar of toppling buildings. Gunfire snaps branches and splits tree trunks; ricochets off dusty city walls and hammers battlestar bulkheads. Angry winds rip across the desolate surface of a nearly uninhabitable planet, and the stony confines of an ancient temple sound just as vast and spacious as they should. It is, without a doubt, a mesmerizing lossless outing that doesn't disappoint.
