Terminator: Genisys 3D Blu-ray, Video Quality  


Terminator Genisys actually looks pretty slick in 3D.  Depth and volume are terrific throughout.  There's always a natural sense of space, whether looking at broad, sprawling vistas of either the near past or very near future landscapes or the war-ravaged future timeline.  Space is expansive over wide areas, but even in more intimate settings, like a shot inside a plane interior, look great. Light or dark doesn't matter.  Big Golden Gate Bridge vistas and Cyberdyne exteriors or, in the future war segments, the expansive and gray time travel area or a dark sewer are equally impressive.  Characters are shapely, both humans and endoskeleton Terminators alike. Depth extends to battle wounds.  A Terminator is blasted near film's beginning -- in that aforementioned sewer, actually -- and the chest cavity that reveals the broken machine innards presents with a tangible, reach-in-there sense of depth.  Even John Connor's facial scars show a tactile depth about them. Action scenes present some great spacing, too, particularly in one of the film's signature momentsinvolving a bus hanging off the side of a bridge. The 3D presentation additionally wows with its ability to extend beyond, and back into, the screen. Debris flies outward.  Guns and T-1000 "knives and stabbing weapons" appear to extend beyond screen's confines. Laser blasts push inward. The movie shows excellent spacial awareness and knows what to do with just about every element, which is a key factor in making the 3D presentation so entertaining. Note that the equipment used for the purpose of this review did reveal minor crosstalk effects, generally over text but occasionally around objects, especially moving people. General picture attributes hold up very well with no perceptible difference with the 2D-only Blu-ray version, which is also included in this 3D package.  Details remain sharp and well defined, whether in the dreary future war segments or the brighter "past" before nuclear holocaust all but erases more than a trace of color. In these segments, colors are sparkling, whether the Golden Gate Bridge, a yellow school bus, blue mechanical devices in the Cyberdyne building, or bright digital readouts.  In the future, purple laser blasts and fiery explosions stand apart. Black levels remain deep without crushing out detail, critical in the film's opening segment.

* J6 E6 E, {# G) @$ i% U9 {Terminator Genisys arrives on Blu-ray with a Dolby Atmos (core Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless) soundtrack.  This review pertains only to the 7.1 mix.  The sound is expectedly dynamic and all-invovling. Right from the get-go, the Paramount stars push through the stage with a crisp, well defined heft and effortless movement along the stage. The recreated nuclear war that opens the film offers tangible heft to missile launches and explosions, again with plenty of intricately moving sound parts that fill the stage with the horrors of modern warfare. As the action shifts to a climactic battle in the war between man and machine, various explosions deliver healthy, meaty wallops while laser blasts push through the stage, Hunter-Killer drones zip around overhead, and various other pieces of wartime din surround the listener. In the film's "past" timeframes, the action remains well defined with various crashes, crunches, and flying debris creating immersive, detailed, and precisely chaotic action.  Gunfire is crisp and heavy.  Music enjoys excellent, speaker-vanishing clarity and wide placement. Dialogue is precisely prioritized and enjoys a few occurrences of natural reverberation when the environment demands.
